Pasternak's first book of poems, My Sister, Life (1917), is one of the most influential collections ever published in the Russian language. When it finally was published in 1921, the book revolutionised Russian poetry. Nobel laureate Boris Pasternak was highly regarded in his native Russia as one of the country’s greatest post-revolutionary poets. He did not gain worldwide acclaim, however, until his only novel, Doctor Zhivago, was first published in Europe in 1958, just two years before the author’s death. Boris Pasternak was born into a prominent Jewish family in Moscow, where his father, Leonid Osipovich Pasternak, was a professor at the Moscow School of Painting. His mother, Rosa Kaufman, was an acclaimed concert pianist. Their home was open to such guests as Sergei Rachmaninoff, Aleksandr Scriabin, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Tolstoy.
